10 Must-Have Essentials for a 1-Year-Old

When my little boy turned one, I realized there are a few essentials that make life so much easier — for both parents and toddlers! Between meals, naps, playtime, and outings, having the right items can save time, keep your home organized, and make everyday life a little smoother. Here’s my go-to list of 10 must-have essentials for a 1-year-old — from toys that spark curiosity to practical tools that help parents stay sane.

1. High Chair / Booster Seat

A good high chair is a lifesaver during mealtime. It keeps your toddler safe and allows them to join the family at the table.
Tip: Look for one that’s easy to clean and has an adjustable tray for growing toddlers.

2. Convertible Car Seat

Safety first! A convertible car seat grows with your child and ensures they’re comfortable during car rides.
Tip: A base that can rotate so that you can turn it facing you upon enter en exiting the car. This make it so much easier to strap them in!

3. Wooden Climbing Set

A safe and soft place for your little one to explore and play is essential. Climbing gym’s also encourage sensory development.
Tip: Choose a mat that’s easy to wipe clean to place underneath to soften falls when they begin to explore. Tumbling off is part of it, that’s how they grow and learn.

4. Bookcase or shelves

Reading together builds language skills and creates a special bonding time. My son adores his books. The ones I read to him before bed time, we keep on shelves in his bedroom.Others, that are more sturdy for wild toddler hands, and ones that make sound (he loves his sound and music books!), we keep downstairs in the play area. The key here is that the book covers are visible and are easy to grab, that way they spark their interest and they will actually pick them up.

5. Shape Sorter Toys

Not only are these great to work on the cognitive skill of sorting the shapes, but they are great fun for toddlers. Also, they grow with them because later on, they will be able to sort by colors too.

6. Baby Feeding Essentials

Bibs, toddler utensils, and toddler-friendly plates are small items that make mealtime easier and more fun.
Tip: Colorful plates and utensils often encourage little ones to feed themselves.

7. Comfort Items (Blanket / Lovey)

A soft blanket or favorite toy can help your toddler feel secure, especially during naps or outings.
Tip: Choose items that are machine-washable for easy cleaning.

8. Outdoor Essentials

A sturdy stroller, sun hat, and toddler-safe sunscreen are must-haves for walks, park trips, and family outings.
Tip: Lightweight, foldable strollers are perfect for city life or travel.

9. Safe Toys for Development

Toys that encourage exploration and skill-building are essential. Think puzzles, stacking blocks, or sensory toys.
Tip: Choose age-appropriate toys that stimulate fine motor skills and creativity.

10. Storage Solutions / Toy Organizers

Keeping toys and essentials organized helps maintain a calm and tidy home.
Tip: Low baskets or shelves at toddler height encourage independence and responsibility.

Conclusion
Every child is unique, but these essentials have made life so much smoother for our little family. Whether you’re looking for practical items, toys that inspire creativity, or ways to keep your home organized, these must-haves are a great place to start.
